Life in Florida

Lessons from the Sunshine State (That I Never Expected)

When I first moved to Florida, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was signing up for. Picture it: endless sunshine, palm trees swaying in that postcard-perfect breeze, and maybe the occasional “oh, look, there’s an alligator” moment to keep things interesting. I was ready for it all, complete with visions of beach days, fruity drinks, and nonstop sunsets.

And, to be fair, Florida does deliver on some of those promises. Yes, there’s sunshine—a lot of it. Palm trees? Everywhere. I get my fill of daily Vitamin D, and if I miss a day, the state practically sends a reminder in the form of blindingly bright mornings. But as much as I love Florida’s sun-drenched charm, I quickly learned that living here comes with a few unexpected quirks. And by “quirks,” I mean everything from unpredictable weather tantrums to wildlife that seems to think it’s your next-door neighbor.

So, as much as I adore the sunsets and tropical vibes, I’ve come to realize that Florida life isn’t just about sipping drinks under a palm tree. Nope, it’s a bit more complex (and hilarious) than that. Let’s just say that the Sunshine State and I have a few things we’re still working out.

1. The Weather Forecast: Pure Guesswork

Florida weather is a bit of a wild card, but honestly, I’ve learned to love it. One minute, it’s all sunshine and palm trees, and the next, there’s a downpour that makes you feel like you’re living in a tropical rainforest. And just as quickly, the skies clear, and the sunshine is back, as if the storm was just a quick cameo. It’s unpredictable, but that’s part of Florida’s charm!

Now, summer? That’s a steamy adventure all on its own. The humidity’s no joke, turning every outing into a free spa day. But come November, Florida redeems itself beautifully. From November to March, we’re blessed with that perfect, crisp winter weather—my dream weather. Those cool, refreshing mornings are a breath of fresh air, and I love every second of it. The temperatures can actually dip below 0 degrees Celsius in Orlando. Who knew the “Sunshine State” had a chilly side? Sure, I miss a dusting of snow now and then (just for the novelty), but those chilly mornings almost make up for it.

My tip? Embrace the unpredictability and keep an umbrella, sunglasses, and maybe even a scarf on hand. You never know what Florida’s going to serve up, but that’s half the fun!

2. Grocery Store Olympics: The Ingredient Label Obsession

One of my first real surprises in the U.S.? The ingredient lists on everyday foods. I’d wander into the grocery store, happily pick up something that looked familiar, and flip it over—only to find an ingredient list that seemed more suited for a science lab than a snack. Things that should’ve just been simple and wholesome suddenly had a splash of sugar here, a sprinkle of preservatives there… like they’d all had a makeover from some overenthusiastic food scientist!

Naturally, I started doing what any curious (and mildly horrified) expat would do—I began spending hours in the grocery aisles, analyzing ingredients and comparing them to the foods I knew from back home. I even dove into documentaries, started following nutrition experts, and may or may not have turned into that person who checks every label before anything goes into the cart. I know it sounds a little extreme, but picture this:

Take Red 40 as an example. It’s in everything from candies to cereals to snacks that, in Europe, wouldn’t dream of needing a bright red dye. And guess what? Red 40 is banned in many European countries because of health concerns, especially for children. Yet here, it’s a regular guest star in kids’ snacks and drinks. Every time I’d find it in a label, I’d have to wonder: are we eating breakfast, or are we part of a science experiment?

Let’s just say my pantry slowly transformed into a carefully curated museum of “Things Without High-Fructose Corn Syrup or Red 40.” It took a bit of work, but eventually, I found a few safe brands that didn’t make me question my dietary choices at every bite. It’s become second nature now, but I’ll never forget those early days of supermarket label-reading marathons!

Just look at the ingredints of this oatmeal.. @FoodBabe

3. The Myth of Endless Beach Days

When people hear “Florida,” they picture me lounging on the beach every weekend, toes in the sand, drink in hand. It’s a lovely image, but here’s the reality: I actually live a good two hours from the nearest beach. So, “endless beach days” have turned into “occasional beach outings,” complete with planning, snacks, and playlists to make the drive a little more fun.

Funny enough, since moving to Florida, I’ve somehow managed to spend more time on beaches in other places—like Puerto Rico, California, and even as far away as Australia and New Zealand! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Florida beach day, but it’s more of a “treat” than a weekend ritual. And as for the sand? It’s Florida’s little souvenir, somehow sticking around in my shoes and my car for weeks afterward.

So while the idea of being a full-time beach bum is appealing, the reality is a bit more “beach in moderation”—and I’m okay with that!

4. Floridian Wildlife Doesn’t Stick to Nature

If you think wildlife here respects boundaries, you’re sorely mistaken. I’ve had encounters with armadillos that casually wander through the yard, lizards that think they own my front porch, and, yes, an alligator sighting or two. Florida wildlife is basically your roommate, and they don’t pay rent. Let’s just say I’ve become an expert in “friendly but cautious” encounters with the locals.

When I first saw the “Do Not Feed or Disturb the Alligators” sign by the lake next to my house, I thought it was a joke. Alligators? Here? It felt like a bit of Florida flair, nothing more.

But then, one day, I spotted it—an actual alligator floating calmly in the water like it owned the place. Turns out, that sign wasn’t kidding! Let’s just say I’m definitely not planning any lakeside swims now.

5. Somehow, It’s Growing on Me

Despite the unpredictable weather, the puzzling food labels, persistent bugs, unexpected critters, and yes, even the occasional hurricane, Florida has a charm that’s hard to resist. There’s something magical about watching the sunrise over the ocean or witnessing an afternoon storm roll in with all its dramatic flair. Florida keeps me on my toes, and while I didn’t expect to be adapting to all these quirks, they’ve definitely added a bit of spice to my life here.

So here’s to life in the Sunshine State—unexpected lessons, wild surprises, and all. Florida, you’re chaotic, unpredictable, and a little intense, but I think I’m starting to love you for it.
